• Age groups with enough players for two teams will go through a selection process to be placed in their appropriate sides. • A selection committee will make these decisions in consultation with the coaches after viewing the Club's trial matches in the pre-season. ... • Mod (U10–U12) & Int (U13) teams will have the strongest players selected in the Division 1 side with the remaining players to make up the Division 2 side. • Should numbers be available for only the minimum for each side then both teams will be given the required minimum and then reserves will be assigned accordingly. • All movement between teams will be at the Selection Committee's discretion and assessed on an individual basis. • Division 2 players will be expected to fill in for Division 1 as required, however their first priority will be with their own team. ... • Any Coach, Player or Parent who experiences problems arising from team and position selection should be directed to the committee, and not taken upon themselves to sort it out. ... • If a player breaches these rules they will receive: 1st offence — verbal warning; 2nd offence — written warning; 3rd offence: automatic 1 week suspension; 4th offence — referred to Disciplinary Committee. ... • Players in Division 1 teams are not permitted to play in Division 2 teams including those in the age group above. • Players filling in for the age group above must fulfil their own team commitments first. • Players in Division 2 filling in for Division 1 within their own age group, are only permitted to play five games in Division 1. Otherwise they must stay within Division 1 and are not allowed to drop back to Division 2. • Players requesting to play the entire season in the age group above, must have approval from the Committee before doing so, and are not permitted to drop back to their own age group including the Final series. Katie Page is a director of the NRL and chief executive of Harvey Norman. ...At a glance you could be mistaken for thinking rugby league is a game of contradictions. How can a season dogged – or, to use the media term, rocked – by so many unacceptable off-field incidents break virtually every record for game attendance, TV viewers, club membership and junior participation? This season broke those records, as in the best ever, in the history of the game. ...As a member of the NRL board for the past five seasons, I am only too familiar with off-field incidents. Each in isolation brought shame to the game and those who love it. ...Harvey Norman has sponsored rugby league since 1998, and after every incident I was asked if the company was questioning the sponsorship or how I felt it hurt the game. Many times we were told it was the beginning of the end for rugby league. Fortunately, this was not an opinion shared by the fans, who deserve the most credit this season. They can tell the difference between reprehensible individual behaviour and the actions of the majority. By majority I mean the 425,000 registered players, including a record 124,319 aged between six and 18. By majority I mean for every registered player the thousands of mums, wives and grandmothers who understand what the game means to their sons, husbands and their community. A successful weekend for the Thirroul Junior Rugby League saw our U12-1 and Under 10-2 progress straight into the Grand Final and the Under 10-1 and Under 11-1 win their minor semis to progress through to the finals. On Sunday the Under 8 Blue's showed their amazing skills when they went on to win the Illawarra Gala Day. And to top the weekend off our mighty Under 6's, the Blues and the Whites went on to play each other in the final of the annual Illawarra Gala Day and in a close fought match the Whites were victorious. The success of all these youngsters illustrates the excellent development programs provided by our coaches and the teams commitment, teamwork and enjoyment in playing rugby league.

There has been some confusion of late in regards to the role of the on field water runners. Please note and pass on to all your teams the following requirements : ...· Must be accredited Leaguesafe, FAO or Sports Trainers · Are to wear the appropriate shirt – Scottie Laycock has a supply if required · Must record their accreditation on the game day sheet · Must wear suitable footwear at all times – bare feet, thongs and sandals are not permitted on the field · Are to station themselves at half way on the ‘Officials’ side of the field · Are not permitted to wander up and down the sideline · Must not coach whilst on the field · Rigid water bottle carriers are not permitted on the field · May only enter the field when attending to injury or during a stoppage in play ie when a try is scored or the referee signals time out – scrums are not stoppages in play ...If there are any issues the referee is entitled to stop the game until they are adhered to. ...Furthermore, each home club must supply an FAO/St Johns Ambulance person/persons to be available while any Junior League game is in progress. The relevant person/persons must be visible and accessible for all teams playing on the day.

Hi all We have had a couple of occurrences in recent rounds in mod games where the same player has taken the attempt for goal after a try has been scored. Once a player has attempted a kick at goal (whether successful or not), that player may not attempt another til all others of the same team (on the field at the time) have been given an attempt at a goal. This has seen two teams be deducted the actual points scored by the same player attempting the goals. Please pass onto your mini/mod coaches (all Under 6 to Under 12 age groups) this rule. Thirroul Butchers Junior Rugby League Club has received a boost to its pre-season preparation from former Australian player and Cronulla Sharks Coach Ricky Stuart. ...Stuart took time out from a Sharks training session at Kiama where the Sharks were in camp preparing for their final game against the Melbourne Storm last season. Stuart was more than willing to make a guest appearance on a new DVD, introducing young players to Mod League. ...Stuart said it was a challenge for kids playing Mini league moving onto Mod League and the DVD would help the players to understand the changes. ...“It’s all about developing you as an individual, helping your skills, helping you as a football player, and therefore you’ll have a better football team,” he said. ...Butchers Under 9 Assistant Coach Troy Beaumont said he developed the DVD as a resource to assist young players with the transition from Mini League, played by players aged under 8, to Mod League, for players aged 9 to 12. ...“Each of the players in Under 9s this year played Mini League last year, which has many different rules to Mod League. It is hoped the DVD will help them with the step up,” he said. ...“Ricky is a very experienced player and coach. I was thrilled that he was able to be involved in this project,” he said. ...The DVD was handed out to all the under 9’s at the Thirroul Butchers registration days and the first training sessions. ...The Cronulla Sharks were in camp at Kiama again the other week and Troy was able to thank Ricky Stuart for his input into the DVD. Troy’s son Jake Beaumont from the Under 9’s presented Stuart with a Butchers shirt and Certificate of Appreciation from the club as well as a copy of the DVD. ...The Butchers under 9’s have a few places left for players wanting to join them for the 2009 season.

Thirroul JRLC would like all members to show their support for the Excelsior No 2 Colliery Development by the Sheargold Group. As part of their development plans, they would like to include a junior playing field. At present they have been advised that the community requires a soccer field, however we have informed them of our lack of junior fields for rugby league and they have advised that Wollongong Council will ultimately decide which code the field will go to if the development goes ahead. In order to show Council we need the space, we are asking all Parents/Guardians to get onboard and sign a partition. These partitions will be forwarded to each team manager to collect signatures and will also be available at the sign on table on Saturday 28 March at Gibson Park. We understand that some Parents may not agree to the development, but for the future of the Juniors and in the best interests of the players, we ask for your support. Well it was another beautiful autumn morning as we rocked up at Ruby’s for our champagne breakfast. ... This year was extra special as we were there to try and raise some funds for the Devine Family. ... We dedicated this bus trip to Michelle who is our Queen of Shopping Bus Trips and had nicknamed our first one as the GBDO. The trip up was pretty quiet as people caught up on the gossip and prepared their battle plan for the day, Before we knew it we arrived at Birkenhead Point and received our special ‘b’ stickers – we assumed this was for Butchers of course and we hit the shops to make the most of our special ‘butcher’ discounts. The rain did not dampen our spirits as we all headed to the Drummoyne Sailing club for lunch where the sun came out and made for an enjoyable rest. ... It was here we found out that Jacqui had completely blitzed all comers and won Man of the Match already! ...Thank god we did as we had to empty out the bottom of the bus to fit in, yes you guessed it, all of Jacqui’s furniture!!!!! Thanks to the bus driver, a fork lift and some helpful Freedom guys, it was all stored safely underneath. ...After drawing the lucky door prizes and busting open some bubbly, thanks to all our girls for digging deep and donating to our cause for some of Michelle’s GBDO champagne and Best Bus Trip Songs Ever music CD’s. Unfortunately we had a Flinstone’s bus with NO CD player in it to play our special CD’s – great, but no-one seemed to mind. As darkness closed in and the laughter got louder we did have to make an emergency pit stop (not mentioning anyone’s names) but Tracey and Charmaine found they were unable to contain their drinks adequately. ...We arrived at the Ryans and were met by a fleet of trucks to take Jacqui’s furniture home of course and some very helpful hubby’s who were there to collect their wives. Our President did attempt to capture some photographic evidence of our shopping excitement but was unable to drive the camera – he is now on the bench. Thanks heaps to Ruby’s, Greens Northern Coaches, Our Bus Driver, Birkenhead Point, Toni Emery, Cathy Bailey and Ann Lackersteen and all the Girls who came along.

Summer shone on the Butchers at Thirlmere

The first weekend in Autumn saw the return to summer where the Thirroul Butchers travelled to Thirlmere for a day long battle in glorious but hot conditions. Thirlmere rewarded their 250th club registration and hosted the Butchers on up to three fields at a time. Many youngsters enjoyed their first game, which were played with excellent spirit, and high quality refereeing was a highlight throughout the day. This year the Thirroul club is concentrating on up-skilling and player development with the assistance of experienced senior coaching staff and Friday night saw its first coaching and management clinic which helped build a positive atmosphere in the club. The club nurtures its mini players from 6 years to 8 years old ensuring development and enjoyment is experienced by all, these teams had a great hitout against the roosters. The butchers boast eight mod league teams (players from 9 to 12 years old) who go through a developmental stage, learning the rules and the skills and this was seen on the field with fine performances at Thirlmere. ...But it was our international players (13 years to 16 years) that really stood up. The huge Thirlmere club boasted some 20 plus players in each of these age divisions, but it was the Butchers who illustrated the skills and commitment necessary to play the game in the right esteem. Perhaps the most pleasing results were from our Under 14’s and 15’s teams, who played short of players but outclassed and outplayed a larger pack. ...Thirroul JRLC welcomes all players and would especially like to see more Under 14’s and 15’s join our club. Rule Changes

International - U13 to U16 a) Stripping Law - This change only relates to the ball being stripped in the act of scoring a try. If the ball is stripped in the Field of Play, the rule remains the same. Stripping rule: - “ Where two or more player are effecting the same tackle – irrespective of whether all but one “drops off” the tackle, and the ball is subsequently taken from the tackled player, a penalty will be awarded against the player or players effecting the tackle unless the tackled player is attempting to ground the ball for a try.” All junior grades including Under 18's b) Shoulder Charge - The CRL has now approved the new rule outlawing shoulder charges in all junior grades up to and including Under 18’s.

Junior Butchers to serve apprenticeship before grade

THIRROUL Rugby League Club is spearheading a new initiative in the Northern Illawarra by taking over the coaching and training roles in under 15s and under 16s. The initiative aims to develop the Butchers’ juniors into skilled grade players. It will provide the senior club with a high standard of player coming into under 18s and boost junior coaching staff to a new level. Thirroul’s seniors hope to maintain this relationship with the juniors to make the transition into grade easier. The Butchers are the only Carlton League side from Helensburgh to Corrimal and have a strong junior base. “The idea has been initiated by us and is part of an overall strategy to build a successful club supported by the local community and sponsors,” Butchers first grade coach Phil Ostwald said. “Another way of building our relationship with the juniors will be that senior players will attend junior coaching sessions and games.” The Thirroul Butchers’ under 15 and under 16 sides launched their 2008 season with a barbeque at Ruby’s on Bulli Beach recently. Thirroul junior and former Dragons and Wests player Ryan Powell will coach the under 15s. He will be assisted by another former Dragon and Magpie, Aaron Beath and ex-Helensburgh Tiger Derek Short. Former Steeler and Thirroul junior, Brett Jones, will also join the coaching staff when his Illawarra representative coaching duties are complete. These grade players will be leading the boys into the next phase of their games and the response has been overwhelming. The skills they bring to the team will definitely make them a force to be reckoned with on the footy field. Aaron and Ryan extend an invitation to all prospective under 15's players to come along and join the team.
